We’ve been wanting to strawberry pick for a while now but I just wasn’t sure how id able to since they were so low to the ground. Yesterday we decided to head over to our local strawberry farm and give it a go. The sun shone so bright, the clouds were the puffy kind that you create shapes out of, and the fields were ready to pick.
After making sure everyone was ready to go with lots of bug spray and sunscreen, we walked over and got our buckets. The kids found a wooden cut out that you poke your heads through for photos. It was so cute seeing Adelaide try and stick her face in as she couldn’t fully reach.
Once in the strawberry fields, we explained to the kids that they needed to pick only the red ones and very red at that. They asked that we don’t pick the flowers and the kids honestly did great with it. It was so cute to watch them find a red one and then ask me if it was a good one. They did a great job finding them!
We found a couple of strawberries and placed them in the baskets. The woman at the front told us they were feeding, Curly, the pet bull. So we had to go check that out. It sure is fascinating watching and learning about different types of animals. These bulls were huge and they sure loved the strawberries!
The sun was pretty direct and so we all got a tired in the sun, especially the babes. They picked for a while but ended up hanging at a little play area and taking a break with Daniel while I finished pickin.
I overheard a gal and her husband talking about how the berries would still be good for jam even if they looked a certain way. It actually turned out to be just what I needed to hear to know that I could still use the berries for our pie at home even if some looked a bit overdone by the sun. Rowan wanted to pick a few more, so we chose to pick 10 more berries and went over to another little area just him and I to do just that. Taking those individual moments with each other is also so important. Just little memories created that bond us each together.
Having to bend over low to the ground really hurts my back a whole lot. So the repetitive motion ended up leading me to extra pain for a couple days. Next time maybe we’d pick some and buy some too. Although this time all the berries for purchase were gone. We got a large bucket partially full and it was just what we needed.
All these little moments are what make motherhood so pure and special! I sure love spending time as a family together! Strawberry pickin was a success, minus all the pain I was in afterwards. Our reward was eating a delicious strawberry pie from the ones we picked. It sure.is rewarding pickin your own fruit and turning it into something yummy!
Love,
Sarah
